The guidance to many professionals from industry associations has been conflicting or non-existent; some states being providing clear direction to their private process serving agents, and some not. While Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and state rules clearly permit process of service, courtrooms are empty; judges, attorneys, and their respective staff members are not interacting with the public, and for good reason.
Beginning on April 1, BCN&DS has decided to pause operations until April 15th when we all hopefully know more about #COVID19, its precautions, and impact.
Please listen to advice only from credible sources (linked below) during this time.
If you are a business which needs help with a task or responsibility that we may not have partnered with you before, feel free to contact Michael.
If we can be of any help remotely with skip tracing, background checks, or serving defendants electronically (with the approval of the assigned judge in your jurisdiction), let's get in touch and see how we can support each other through these challenging months.
For individuals or attorneys seeking assistance with cases of Protection Orders, Restraining Orders (risk of personal injury), Child Abuse, and other cases involving potential harm to someone, please contact your county or local sheriff for guidance on how to get those documents served.
As always, thank you for your support of our "shop." We look forward to working together again as soon as possible after we all emerge in the New World.
Take care of yourself and everyone else that you can.
Michael, Alejandra & Jessica
Together, we are facing a truly unprecedented situation. The global coronavirus pandemic is affecting all of our families, businesses, communities, and way of life.
During this time, I want to let you know that my business was born out of moments like this, and we are still serving process, notarizing loans, and performing general notary work and site inspections, while following the rules of procedure and social distancing requirements.
To that end, we have implemented policies and procedures to keep our employees, our clients, and the people we’re serving safe. In addition, our business uses technology that allows us to remotely collaborate and communicate with servers and clients.
So please let us know if there are other opportunities for us to help your business amid the crisis. If a business need has arisen that you hadn't been prepared for, it's possible that we can take it on for you, at least temporarily.
We're here for you.
Please stay safe and well,
Michael & Team
Bergen County Notary & Document Services, LLC
We are truly living through both interesting and dangerous times. The coronavirus pandemic is impacting everyone from our families and friends, to our businesses and co-employees, to our first responders and healthcare workers as well as grocery and pharmacy workers who are bravely on the front lines. They are beyond inspiring.
As the situation continues to affect our world, I wanted to reach out and provide an update on what's going on here.
None of our staff members or contractors have either displayed symptoms or tested positive for either influenza or coronavirus.
While mainly only a meeting, printing and mail hub, in an effort to keep everyone safe, we have decided to temporarily close our facility in Teterboro until further notice. Along with co-tenants, we will have our space professionally cleaned by a well-known commercial cleaning service out of an abundance of precaution, before we return to handling documents at that location. This will include ducts, HVAC, carpeting, ceilings, floors, walls, and all office equipment.
In the meantime, we are able to print offsite, and are still able to offer all of the same services we always have, but may need to add social distancing to some of those offerings, as best we can, while still following rules of procedure.
Above all else, our thoughts are with those affected by the virus, particularly those who are sick or hospitalized, wishing them a rapid recovery.
While Teaneck and other area of our territory are either closed off or have curfews and/or limited access, I want to do as much as possible support customers during this period, while ensuring the safety of all involved, and following these temporary restrictions.
We are here for you if you feel the need to reach out by phone with questions. For now, we will continue to accept all jobs that are practical and possible for us to complete, but which will not put our clients, signers, or others who may receive documents from us in harm's way.
In the meantime, we are doing what we can remotely and in-person to support our community's local food bank, check in on elders, and simply remain alert at home to family members' temperatures and possible symptoms.
Please continue to follow the guidelines being provided by the Centers for Disease Control, as well as updates from state, county, and local authorities who are working tirelessly to keep us safe.
Stay safe and well,
Michael & Team

I love the article (linked below). It reminds me of when I once injured my ankle while I was in college.I sat in the security office for an hour or so with ice packs on my ankle. Yes, that same ankle, for those who know me.
Making small talk with the security officer who had picked me up after I'd slipped and fallen face-forward in the ice/snow outside of his office, at some point he said "I have the most important job on this campus..."
He went on to describe some of his responsibilities during the previous 20+ years, including some successful, well-known graduates who he felt proud of, whether he had encountered them or not.
"I've made a difference for the better here in a thousand different ways and if I could go back, I'd do nothing differently,' he said proudly.
What about YOU? Can enough daily meaning compensate for a lack of daily bread, if you can make it work?

Machines have no empathy. We can program systems to analyze data. We can create settings which will trigger alerts; but machines will never have the sympathetic ear or the kind voice that our clients desperately need when things go haywire.
Those of us at Bergen County Notary & Document have been successful in the legal support space because we listen to our clients to fully understand their needs, and personally communicate detailed updates during the process to avoid miscommunication.
We don't feel that clients should be uploading sensitive, confidential legal documents to unfamiliar companies, only to receive standardized auto-reply e-mail updates, while never speaking to an actual person. How helpful is that when things do not go as planned, as they often can?
Here at BCN&DS, you can be sure that a living, breathing, human being is partnering with you from the start, from answering the phone to mailing you the finalized documents. We will deal with you as well as the defendant/respondent being served in a professional, honest, ethical, and empathetic manner, and can even appear in court on your behalf, if needed.
Now show me the robot who can do that!

There are several different kinds of powers of attorney that can be used for different purposes. Before executing this crucial document, it is important to understand what your options are.
A power of attorney allows a person you appoint -- your "attorney-in-fact" or agent -- to act in your place for financial or other purposes when and if you ever become incapacitated or if you can't act on your own behalf.
There are four main types of powers of attorney:
Whichever type of power of attorney you use, it is important to think carefully about who will be your attorney-in-fact. Your attorney-in-fact will have a lot of control over your finances, and it is crucial that you trust him or her completely.
As always, a new year gives us a chance to start over; reset the clock, if you will.
Our "shop" just completed its first year, and we're looking forward to the next!
Many thanks to all of the clients who put their trust in us, as well as those who referred new business our way.
Don't picture anything but your specific vision of success for 2020!
We're excited to execute our plans for the next twelve months, and are grateful to those of you who will be partnering with us.
Stay safe and well,
Michael, Jessica & Team
